I should remain quiet till the final installment. But...I will, offer anecdotal personal experience with my own experimentation re: poly-pharm supplementation doing regular hard workouts. Good results for a couple of years, then troubles.
Now new (old) regimen of: as needed organic coffee enemas, with restoration of gut through fermented organic sauerkraut and garlic.
Stem cells: look into ancient Indian practice of recycling your own water. Free.
The truth in SAD, and any of the diets, is that we have been and continue to be bombarded by toxins (as I peck away at this damn iPhone). Detox. Turn off the lies coming through the towers. Fear/anger is toxic. Make peace with life and death. Then in conjunction with diet and exercise, lots of Sunlight (without toxic sunscreen); a daily quart per 50lbs body weight of structured pure water. Intermittent fasting (I eat at 11am & 6pm) with an occasional full fast. Sleep in darkness 7-8 hours.
100% pure gum spirits to cleanse overgrowth of parasites and fungi.
Get off the synthetic meds and supps safely. Fresh air when they are not spraying aluminum, cadmium, etc. Stayin’ alive, stayin alive.
Contribute anytime, please! Great of you to share your personal experiences. Doing my best to stay somewhat balanced, or at least declare my biases. Wrap-up tomorrow is on Emotional Health, an area I think even more charged and controversial than Diet or Bio-Hacking.
Finding fresh air without high pollutant levels, drinkable water, and food that is not already toxic by the farming or shipping/marketing processes -- all this increasingly a challenge. I am likely shifting location -- changing continents -- within a year. One major consideration: air quality. Generally poor in the city where I live now, and breathing everyday is NOT optional. I'm not having problems that I know of -- but going on inside, who knows? Another major consideration: the food supply. Pretty good here and a lot from local farms. But I'm considering a nation which has strict laws against GMO and some common industrial pesticides used in agriculture. Not relocating immediately -- still looking and researching, but will post up on all that when it happens.
It's a kitchen sink approach, right? Throw everything at the perceived problem, which in this case is normal biological aging. We have questions right away about feasibility, affordability, compliance, interaction effects, and even tracking the results. If a high school student designed an experiment like this, it should result in a failing grade for that science class.
Nonetheless, there exists a small but growing community of bio-hackers publishing their supplement lists, etc. Many (not all) of them seem to be utra-health conscious, upscale middle-class or even relatively affluent, and nominally well-educated. So WTF? I support anyone taking charge of their own health and fitness, but I share your concerns on this one.
Social contagion might explain part of it? Transhumanism is in vogue among our power elites and no small number of would-be elites. I got why sensible people will reject the deeply unhealthy -- if not pathological -- mainstream practices: the SAD, the lack of physical activity, etc. But I do not see this as the way to go. Seems more a status marker: look at all the money I can piss away.
I will keep tracking the poly-supplement movement and see what develops. Is it overly complicated and even more than a bit crazy? Sure seems that way to me. More of an expensive dead-end rather than true alternative. But I know and have known enough people who have drinking or drugging themselves to death as expensive hobbies -- so I am trying to chill on this as many members of bio-hacking crowd have some commitment to healthy eating and exercise.
Saw Dr. Hyman do a number of interviews, including Meghan Kelly. Everyone so far has given him a FREE PASS on how expensive and how complicated his proposed solutions are, including his "HEALTHY AGING SHAKE." Forget journalism -- whatever happened to interviewers asking basic questions? That's why I broke down the costs per ingredient, etc. How the fux can you -- celebrity influencer -- be promoting this when you have not done even the most basic cost-benefit analysis? Showing my age here.
Yeah. It's a completely unscientific approach that seems more about appearances than anything. I worry about the nocebo effect too -- what if you can't get your special Andean medicinal root shipped to your doorstep in five years? You've trained your body to think that it *needs* this to function properly. In my opinion, it's better to see how many things you can *eliminate* and still maintain optimal performance.
Thank DH for your comprehensive, balanced tome.

All best!
Hyman's list of supplements is insane. I'm reminded of my favorite Mark Rippetoe quote -- "Complexity appeals to stupid people".
