Covid Comorbidities for 2020 & 2021
The new CDC language is “deaths involving coronavirus disease 2019.” For over 5% of deaths, only Covid reported. For the remaining (94% +), an average "4.0 additional conditions or causes per death."
The Comorbidity Controversy
In early January 2022, CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky caught some friendly fire when she explained on Good Morning America that “over 75% of COVID-19 deaths in fully vaccinated people had occurred among those with at least four risk factors [comorbidities].” She was accused of fat-shaming, blaming the victims, and so on. (See also her related Tweet and some of the responses).
In reality, on Good Morning America, CDC Director Dr. Walensky was trying to explain why the vaccine-booster regimen failed the “fully vaccinated.” These people were old, and/or sick, so what would you expect, amirite?
So what percentage of deaths with only three comorbidities? Not said. Likewise, the CDC, according to Reuters, did NOT respond to a request for information as to what percentage of COVID-19 deaths occurred among NOT “fully vaccinated” people with at least four risk factors [comorbidities].”
Interesting. For the annual flu vaccine, if you were elderly or at high risk, you were generally encouraged to get your flu shot. In explaining why being fully vaccinated for Covid-19 still resulted in so many deaths, CDC Director Dr. Walensky seems to have inverted the paradigm: these people were already sick or old, so what did you expect? That the vaccines might be effective for their proscribed purpose? Silly you.
So if you were fully vaccinated but had a “death involving Covid-19,” the CDC and MSM will place the blame on your age and pre-existing conditions. If you are fully vaccinated but do NOT suffer a “death involving Covid-19,” the CDC and the MSM will credit the vaccine — with your age and pre-existing conditions now irrelevant.
We will look at the CDC data shortly. But first, a brief trip down the memory hole into the Wonderland of official approved Covid narratives.
Less than one year ago
Around this time last year, from the highest levels of our government, we had a consistent message: get vaccinated and and you will not get Covid.
CDC Director Dr. Walensky: “that’s not just in the clinical trials, but it’s also in the real-world data.” (2 April 2021).
Dr. Anthony Fauci: “you become a dead end to the virus.” (16 May 2021).
President Joseph Biden: “You’re not going to get Covid if you have these vaccinations.” (July 2021).
By late March 2021, the “real-world data” overwhelmingly proved the vaccines do NOT prevent infection or transmission. Dr. Walensky’s remarks were challenged by her fellow scientists outside the USA shortly after she made them.
Comedically, when President Biden was telling us otherwise in July 2021, in the UK, the vaccine apologists were already on it:
Most COVID deaths in England now are in the vaccinated — here's why that shouldn't alarm you. (Christian Yates, 15 July 2021).
Yes, more vaccinated people are experiencing Covid-involved deaths than unvaccinated people. So? Let’s run that by one time. In July 2021, when President Joseph Biden was telling the American people that the vaccines prevent Covid, UK health experts were telling people without irony:
At first glance, this [the vaccinated dying from Covid] may seem alarming, but it is exactly as would be expected. (Yates, 15 July 2021).
This shared level of cognitive dissonance is altogether unprecedented.
In July 2021, less than one year ago, our government was still claiming the vaccines prevent infection and transmission. The UK experts had acknowledged the vaccines do NOT, but reassured their public that vaccinated people dying with Covid “is exactly as would be expected.” From fringe conspiracy theory to “well, we knew that all along” — not even six months, just a short flight from NYC to London.
One more USA-UK comparison
What else do we know from across the pond, in the UK?
In the UK, the "average age of death due to COVID-19 is higher than the overall average age of death."
Got it? In the UK, life kills you slightly before Covid does. This largely holds true also for the EU. So like the flu, even though for well over a year we were told that Covid was NOT like the flu, the people at primary risk from Covid were the elderly and the already unhealthy. Yes, even when fully vaccinated.
So when the fully vaccinated in the good ol’ USA die, well — the CDC’s not saying it’s these people’s fault, exactly, but it’s certainly not the vaccine’s fault. Fittingly enough, a recent study out of Denmark found the American mRNA vaccines did NOT outperform the placebo in reducing All-Cause Mortality. Blame the placebo.
But Walensky was correct about comorbidities
The vaccines do not work as promised. Fauci, Walensky, Biden, and many others lied — or were “mistaken” when the “science changed” because the global evidence overwhelmingly refuted the American narrative. Even the UK wasn’t buying our BS.
But in January 2022, Dr. Walensky made a point which she was publicly forced to backtrack: in the USA, comorbidities have become normalized — but remain nonetheless pathological. These comorbidities contribute to Covid mortality risk: hence why the USA has performed so poorly compared with the other highly developed nations.
The USA for the years 2020-2021, according to the WHO, has an estimated Excess Deaths rate of 140 per 100K — compared with Sweden’s 56 per 100K and Japan’s -8 per 100K. (Yes, that is a negative 8. Japan focused on public health, and not just Covid. Healthier people have generally better outcomes).
In comparison to the USA, these nations not only had vastly different Covid policies (Sweden: no lockdowns or vaccine mandates; Japan: no vaccine mandates, highly limited use of quarantine) — they also have generally healthier populations.
Over past sixty years, but accelerating in the last two decades, the USA has seen dramatic increases in obesity, diabetes and prediabetes, hypertension, and more. We surveyed the data in a recent post. You cannot vaccinate away metabolic syndrome.
The CDC Data, Visualized
Let’s look at CDC data set “Conditions Contributing to COVID-19 Deaths, by State and Age, Provisional 2020-2022.” The new phrasing is “deaths involving coronavirus disease 2019” — not deaths from or death with. A few quick notes on the data set from the CDC:
For over 5% of deaths, COVID-19 was the only cause mentioned on the death certificate.
For deaths with conditions or causes in addition to COVID-19, there were on average 4.0 additional conditions or causes per death. (So 94% +).
But a problem, first.
For each condition reported for each age group per year, the CDC data set gives two numbers: Covid-19 Deaths, and Number of Mentions. For example, for Year 2020, Age Group 0-24 years, for the Condition “Influenza and pneumonia,” we have a reported 249 COVID-19 Deaths, but a reported 256 Number of Mentions.
The total number of deaths involving Covid for Year 2020, Age Group 0-24 years: 759. So was the Condition “Influenza and pneumonia” associated directly with 249 COVID-19 Deaths? Or, on the Death Certificates for this cohort, did “Influenza and pneumonia” receive 256 Number of Mentions?
The online codebook does not clarify what these categories — COVID-19 Deaths and Number of Mentions — precisely mean in relation to Condition. Here’s how the CDC data set looks in Excel:
Please note that in this data set, the reported observations for the variables Covid-19 Deaths and Number of Mentions are generally close. For each and every Condition excepting “COVID-19”, the Number of Mentions is ALWAYS greater than or equal to Covid-19 Deaths. For the Condition “COVID-19”, the reported values for Covid-19 Deaths and Number of Mentions always match — are always equal.
So, again, how the CDC data set would look in Excel for Year 2020, Condition “COVID-19”, all the Age Groups:
At first, the choice seemed obvious — graph the counts for Number of Mentions per Condition, Age Group, and Year. But we get a more conservative count — and one it seems more closely tied to “deaths involving coronavirus disease 2019”, when we graph the counts for COVID-19 Deaths per Condition, Age Group, and Year.
So the following graphs below do so. The Condition “COVID-19” is not displayed — as the graphs show all the conditions and comorbidities associated with “deaths involving coronavirus disease 2019.” But each graph does have a red line indicating the total number of Covid deaths for that Age Group in that Year.
Two more pieces of fine print: Year 2022 is excluded as the data is still tentative, and the CDC did play games with the Age Groups.

Covid Deaths in 2020: Other Conditions & Comorbidities
Covid Deaths in 2021: Other Conditions & Comorbidities
What does it all mean? Well, Covid is a LOT like the flu. The people most at risk are the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions. Age-wise, Covid mortality risk follows a rough log-scale gradient. Healthy young people, virtually no risk.
What can you do? Eat clean: cut the sugar and the processed foods. Stay active. Strength train twice a week or the equivalent: maintain your lean muscle mass. Manage stress, particularly chronic stress.
If you do these things, you will decrease your All-Cause mortality risk. Your risk from Covid. But also from heart disease, stroke, renal failure, various kinds of cancer, and much more.
We will all die eventually. But you have it in your power to make lifestyle choices and changes — choices and changes that will enable you to live longer and fuller, and stay healthy and active up to or near to the very end.
Never surrender responsibility for your health to the State, or Big Pharma, or the medical-industrial complex. As a Goldman Sachs analyst observed sometime before the Covid pandemic, Big Pharma and our medical-industrial complex make vastly more profit from chronically ill people than from healthy people. As our current government likewise knows well, sick people and fearful people are easier to control.
Do not pretend that the FDA and the MSM have your best interest in mind. Long-term, perhaps the most dangerous WOKE trend in American society right now: “Decolonizing Fitness and Wellness.” But accepting personal responsibility for your health is true resistance. Living a healthy lifestyle, more so. Join the resistance.

Dude, they retracted the Kostoff paper a couple weeks ago that adjusted deaths to be in line with those actually caused by COVID in order to conduct a proper risk benefit analysis. Science is dead. Well, academia anyway. Thanks for the consistently quality analysis and exposition!
The younger the more significant obesity factors into bad outcomes. I still don't trust their death figures attributed to Covid. A lot of pneumonia deaths and other deaths called 'covid' for the government lottery bonus $$.
